The Next Step Is Enough

 Psalm 37:23

“The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in Him.” — Psalm 37:23

When walking with a camera, you rarely see the photograph from a distance.

You move slowly. One step at a time. Adjusting your position, watching the light, noticing small details along the way. Often the image only appears after you've already started walking.

Faith works in much the same way.

We often want the entire route laid out before us. We want to know where we’re going, how things will unfold, and what the final outcome will look like. But Scripture reminds us that God usually works differently.

He guides steps, not entire roadmaps.

One Step at a Time

Psalm 37:23 tells us that the Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in Him. Notice it doesn’t say He reveals every turn in advance. Instead, He stabilises the next step.

This can feel frustrating when we want certainty.

But step-by-step guidance keeps us close to Him.

If we knew the whole path, we might try to walk it on our own strength. When we only see the next step, we learn to depend on Him daily.

The Photographer’s Walk

Many of the best photographs are found while simply walking and paying attention. You start with no clear image in mind, but along the way the light shifts, a scene unfolds, or a moment appears.

If you had stayed home waiting for the perfect plan, you would have missed it.

Faithfulness often looks like that: walking attentively with God, trusting that He will guide your steps along the way.

When You Slip

Just a few verses later, the psalm offers another reassurance:

“Though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with His hand.” — Psalm 37:24

Even when we misstep, God’s grip is stronger than our footing.

The journey of faith is not about walking perfectly. It’s about walking with Him.

The Next Step

If the future feels uncertain, remember this: you don’t need to see miles ahead.

You only need the next step.

Delight in God today.
Trust Him today.
Walk with Him today.

And He will make your steps firm.

Prayer

Lord, help me trust You with the steps ahead of me. When I want to see the whole path, remind me that You guide me one step at a time. Strengthen my faith to walk with You daily and trust that You are directing my journey. Amen.
