This weekend — the quiet one after Christmas — we headed over to the skatepark. One of my boys had received a skateboard for Christmas, and he couldn’t wait to give it a proper go.
Watching him step onto the board brought back memories of my own childhood. I grew up skateboarding, and I still love it. It’s one of those things that looks effortless when done well, but anyone who’s tried knows the truth — it takes time, practice, patience, and plenty of falls along the way.
You don’t just step on a board and glide.
You wobble.
You fall.
You get back up.
And you try again.
Progress Comes Through Persistence
Skateboarding teaches you something quickly: failure isn’t the end — it’s part of the process. Every scrape, every missed landing, every tumble is simply a lesson pointing you toward improvement.
And isn’t faith often the same?
Our walk with God isn’t about getting everything right first time. It’s about perseverance — choosing to stand up again when we stumble and trusting that growth happens through consistency, not perfection.
Scripture reminds us:
“Though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again.”
— Proverbs 24:16
Falling doesn’t disqualify us.
Staying down does.
Learning Balance Takes Time
Skateboarding is all about balance — not just physical, but mental too. You learn when to push, when to steady yourself, and when to take a step back.
Faith requires balance as well.
We learn to trust God when things feel shaky.
We learn to lean into Him when we feel unsure.
And over time, what once felt unstable becomes familiar.
“For we walk by faith, not by sight.”
— 2 Corinthians 5:7
Just like learning to ride, faith grows through repetition — choosing to trust God again and again, even when we feel unsteady.
Encouragement Makes a Difference
One of the best parts of being at the skatepark was the encouragement. Every small success was celebrated. Every fall was met with a quick “You alright?” and a push to try again.
God’s voice is like that too — patient, encouraging, never condemning.
He doesn’t shame us when we fall.
He invites us to rise again.
“Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.”
— Hebrews 12:1
Faith isn’t about speed.
It’s about endurance.
Keep Going
Watching my son step back onto the board after a fall reminded me of something simple but powerful:
Growth happens when we don’t give up.
Whether it’s faith, parenting, life, or learning something new — God is shaping us in the getting back up.
So if you’ve stumbled recently…
If life has knocked you off balance…
If faith feels harder than you expected…
Get back up.
Take the next step.
And keep going.
God isn’t finished with you yet.
A Short Prayer
Lord, help me persevere when I fall.
Give me the courage to get back up, the patience to keep learning, and the faith to trust You through every step.
Amen.
