When the Space Feels Too Small

This week we travelled to France to visit Nausicaá National Sea Centre, an incredible aquarium that gives you a glimpse into the vast world beneath the ocean’s surface.

One of the most impressive parts of the visit is The Grand Bay viewing window — a huge tank holding around 10,000 cubic metres of water (10 million litres). The viewing window alone stretches about 20 metres wide and 5 metres high.

Standing in front of it, you feel tiny.

Fish of all shapes and sizes glide past, sharks move calmly through the water, and the whole scene feels peaceful and almost endless.

Then, slowly passing through the water, came a giant manta ray.

It was beautiful to watch — graceful and calm — yet even in that enormous tank it somehow seemed too big for the space.

Feeling Restricted

Watching it made me think about how we sometimes feel in life.

As Christians, there can be moments when we feel restrained — as if the space around us is too small for what we feel called to do.

We may look at others travelling the world as missionaries, preaching to thousands, or doing incredible work for God, and quietly wonder if we are stuck in a small tank ourselves.

Why am I here?
Should I be doing more?
Am I meant for something bigger?

The Place God Has Given Us

But Scripture reminds us that God places us exactly where we need to be.

“And God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.”
1 Corinthians 12:18

Not everyone is called to the same mission field.

For some, it is across the world.
For others, it is their workplace.
Their family.
Their local community.

The danger comes when we spend too much time wishing we were somewhere else instead of serving faithfully where God has already placed us.

Sometimes the Walls Are Ours

Sometimes the restriction we feel isn’t actually from God.

Sometimes the walls are our own fear.

Fear of stepping out.
Fear of speaking openly about our faith.
Fear of using the gifts God has given us.

Scripture encourages us:

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”
2 Timothy 1:7

The real question may not be “Why am I here?” but rather “Am I using this place well?”

Faithfulness in the Space We’re Given

Watching that manta ray reminded me that size of space doesn’t always determine purpose.

God calls us to be faithful wherever we are — whether that’s on a global stage or quietly in everyday life.

Because sometimes the mission field God has given us is right in front of us.

A Short Prayer

Lord, help me to trust where You have placed me.
Give me courage to use the gifts You’ve given me and faithfulness to serve You wherever I am.
Amen.
