This weekend was busy, but there was no photography. Instead, it was spent fixing bicycles.
I cycle every day to commute to work, and whenever I can, I love getting out for a longer ride at the weekend. Cycling clears my head. It gives me space to think. But for months, I’d neglected my bike. Small noises started creeping in — a creak here, a slip there.
I did what we often do.
I turned my headphones up and ignored it.
Until it finally went.
The Crack We Can’t Ignore
A cracked wheel.
A tyre wall bulging out.
And a long walk home on a very wet day.
Once I started taking things apart to fix the problem, I found more issues — things I’d known about but had chosen to ignore. Worn parts. Loose fittings. Small problems that had quietly grown into bigger ones.
Then there were my children’s bikes too — each with their own issues I’d been putting off fixing.
And as I stood there surrounded by tools, mud, and broken parts, the lesson felt uncomfortably clear.
When Faith Is Neglected
Our faith can be like that.
We notice small things aren’t quite right.
Our prayer life slips.
We stop listening.
We get distracted.
Rather than addressing it, we turn the noise up — fill our lives with busyness, entertainment, or distraction — and carry on.
The Bible gently warns us:
“Pay close attention to your lives and your teaching. Persevere in them.”
— 1 Timothy 4:16
Ignored long enough, something eventually cracks.
The Grace in the Breakdown
The good news is this — fixing the bike was messy, time-consuming, and inconvenient… but necessary.
In the same way, God doesn’t abandon us when things break. He invites us to slow down, take things apart, and let Him restore what’s been neglected.
“Search me, God, and know my heart… see if there is any offensive way in me.”
— Psalm 139:23–24
Breakdowns can be moments of grace if we’re willing to learn from them.
Maintenance Over Emergency Repairs
Faith isn’t just about fixing things when they fail.
It’s about regular care.
Daily attention.
Listening when something feels off.
Because it’s far better to stop and adjust than to wait until everything comes apart.
A Short Prayer
Lord, help me not to ignore the small warnings in my walk with You.
Give me the humility to stop, listen, and let You restore what I’ve neglected.
Amen.
