Small Beginnings: Don’t Despise the First Steps

“Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin.”

Zechariah 4:10

 We often underestimate beginnings.

They feel awkward. Unpolished. Easy to overlook. A first roll of film. A first blog post. A quiet walk with a camera and no clear idea of what we’re looking for. Beginnings rarely look impressive, and that’s exactly why we’re tempted to despise them.

But Scripture tells us something important: God doesn’t.

The First Frame

In photography, the beginning is rarely the image we imagined. The light isn’t quite right. The composition feels uncertain. The results don’t match the vision in our head. It’s tempting to think, This isn’t good enough yet.

So we wait.
We hesitate.
We sometimes don’t even start.

Yet every meaningful body of work begins with a first frame. A small decision to show up. To try. To place the camera to our eye and press the shutter, even when we’re unsure of the outcome.

God rejoices in that moment.

God Works in the Early Stages

Zechariah was speaking to people rebuilding the temple — a task that felt overwhelming and slow. The structure didn’t yet reflect the glory it once had. Progress seemed insignificant. And God’s message was clear: Don’t despise this stage.

The same applies to our creative lives and our faith.

God often does His deepest work when things are unfinished, unimpressive, and unseen. He is not waiting for the completed project to take joy in it — He delights in the act of beginning.

Process Over Prestige

We live in a culture that values polish over progress. We celebrate the final image, not the thousands of quiet moments that led to it. But photography teaches us that growth happens through repetition, patience, and trust in the process.

Film doesn’t reveal its image immediately.
Faith doesn’t either.

Both require time in the dark.

Faithfulness Starts Here

Small beginnings are not a weakness — they are an invitation. An invitation to trust God with the early stages. To keep working when no one is applauding. To stay faithful when the results are still forming.

What feels small to us is often exactly where God is most present.

So don’t rush past this season.
Don’t dismiss what feels unfinished.
Don’t despise the beginning.

God rejoices to see the work begin.
