The Gate of Faith: Don’t Just Stand in Awe — Step Through

This past weekend, while walking on the South Downs, I stopped at a simple gate overlooking the hills. The view beyond was breathtaking — wide open fields, sunlight spilling over the horizon, and a deep sense of peace that words can hardly describe.

As I stood there, I felt God whisper something to my heart:
“This is how many of My people live — standing before the gate, admiring what I’ve prepared, but never taking the step of faith to walk through.”

That moment stayed with me, and I knew I needed to share it.

There’s something about a gate that captures the imagination.

It marks a boundary — the line between where we are and where we could be. It separates the familiar from the unknown, the comfortable from the calling.

Now picture this:
You stand before a gate that opens to a breathtaking view. Beyond it lies a landscape of peace — rolling hills bathed in light, streams that shimmer with life, and a stillness that feels holy. It’s everything your soul has longed for. You sense that this is what God has been drawing you toward all along.

And yet, you hesitate.

You stand there in awe, admiring what you see, maybe even whispering a prayer of gratitude for the beauty beyond the gate — but your feet stay planted where they are.
You never take that next step.

Standing on the Wrong Side

Many Christians live their lives on the wrong side of the gate.
They believe in Jesus, love Him deeply, and can see glimpses of the life He promises — peace that passes understanding, joy unshaken by circumstance, and freedom from the chains that once held them. But something keeps them from walking fully into that life.

The gate becomes a symbol of hesitation — the space between belief and obedience, between hearing God’s call and actually moving toward it.

Sometimes it’s fear: What if I fail? What if God doesn’t come through?
Sometimes it’s doubt: Is what’s beyond that gate really as good as it looks?
And sometimes, it’s comfort — the quiet, subtle pull of staying where things feel safe and predictable.

The Gate Has a Name

Jesus said,

“I am the gate; whoever enters through Me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture.”
(John 10:9)

He didn’t say, “Stand by the gate and admire it.”
He said, enter through it.

Faith is not meant to be a spectator’s experience. It’s an invitation — to step beyond what we can control, to trust the unseen, and to live the kind of life only possible through Him.

When we hesitate, we rob ourselves of the very pasture He promises — the peace, purpose, and abundance that come when we let go of fear and move forward in trust.

The Step That Changes Everything

Walking through the gate doesn’t mean the path will always be easy.
It simply means we’ve decided that what God has prepared is worth leaving our comfort zone for.

Each act of obedience — every prayer whispered in faith, every “yes” when fear says “no” — is a step closer to the life beyond the gate.

The view from where you stand might be breathtaking, but the life on the other side is even better.

So today, if you find yourself standing at that gate — seeing what God has promised but afraid to step through — remember this:
The gate opens not by effort, but by faith.
And the One who calls you through it has already gone before you.

Don’t just look at what God has prepared.
Walk into it.
The beauty beyond the gate was always meant to be lived, not just admired.

A Short Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for being the gate — the way to life, peace, and purpose.
Forgive me for the times I’ve admired Your promises from a distance but hesitated to step through.
Give me the faith to trust You fully and the courage to walk wherever You lead.
Help me not just to see the beauty of Your calling, but to live in it.
Amen.
