Be Still, a verse on repeat in my head.

"Be still and know that I am God," is from Psalm 46:10 in the Old Testament. This verse encourages people to find peace and solace in the presence of God.

In its context, the Psalm speaks about the power and protection of God in times of trouble and chaos. The verse suggests that in the midst of life's storms and challenges, we should pause, quiet our hearts and minds, and recognise that God is in control. It's an invitation to trust in God's sovereignty and to have faith that He is ultimately in charge of all things.

This verse has been interpreted in various ways by different individuals and religious traditions, but at its core, it emphasises the importance of faith, stillness, and acknowledging the divine presence in one's life.

This verse has been echoing in my mind, a constant reminder in the midst of my hectic life. Like most people, I'm juggling a lot - a loving wife, three young children, and even an old dog, all of whom require my attention and care. Days blend into weeks, weeks into months, and it's rare that I find a moment to be still, to think, to embrace silence, and to be alone with my thoughts.

In my life, my photography excursions have always provided that sacred stillness, my chance to reflect, to slow down, and to marvel at the beauty of creation. As I observe the ever-changing play of light and shadow, it's a glimpse into the work of a divine creator.

At times, I try to halt my bicycle during my daily commute, attempting to sit and be still, to meditate in the present moment. But it's a struggle; the urge to constantly be doing something often overpowers my desire to simply sit and be. The practice of meditation, of being in God's presence, remains an ongoing challenge for me.

When I'm out with my camera, engaging in long exposure photography offers a precious opportunity for stillness and reflection. The process of setting up the camera, affixing the ND filter to extend exposure times, allows me to create stunning shots with exposures ranging from five to even ten minutes. During this time, I'm bound to my camera. I can't rush or multitask; I have to stay and watch, nurturing a serene space for contemplation. It's a unique moment when I can't be distracted by other demands, and it's during these prolonged exposures that I can truly be in the present, observing the world around me and immersing myself in deep reflection.

There are several Bible verses that convey similar messages of finding peace, stillness, and trust in God's presence. Here are a few:

1. Psalm 37:7: "Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways when they carry out their wicked schemes."

2. Isaiah 26:3: "You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast because they trust in you."

3. Psalm 62:5: "Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him."

4. Proverbs 3:5-6: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."

5. Matthew 11:28-30: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls."

These verses encourage trust, patience, and finding rest in God's presence amidst life's challenges and busyness. They emphasise the importance of surrendering to God and seeking solace in Him.
